about

An idea has been anchored in me for many years now. That idea is that Man will never make it out of the acute depression he is stuck in and out of the vicious historical circle where civilisations keep on repeating the same mistakes all over again with the only difference that they happen at different levels. He will never make it without transcending his nature. That is where the problem lays. As the third millennium is approaching, Mankind is facing some overwhelming issues. To manage to evaluate Life and Civilisation through a scale of values that isn’t ours seems an unachievable aim.

I have now had this enjoyable thought for a while that the day where the human civilisation will disappear, the Universe will not even notice it. This is not a speech or an apocalyptical preaching but a simple remark that invites us to rethink our place and therefore our priorities.

People lock themselves in their own lives, that they made using some socio cultural models pre-established by their civilisations. This isn’t a problem in itself. Humans can only find their place by positioning themselves according to their cultural origins. However doing so blindly can be a disaster. Each way to live must be the result or the follow-up of a conscious awareness and not only be the outcome of a mental conditioning whether cultural, economical or social. Maybe then, our way to live will stop infringing on our neighbours’s.

At a time when we were thinking that the Earth was the center of the Universe, Man had all reasons to behave like a sovereign, a master. To take very seriously some aspects of civilisations, actually very superficial. But what about today ? If we take a look at the historical evolution of mentalities, we realise that knowledge always preceded transcendency … which hasn’t still happened.

In my opinion the biggest revolution in the history of Humankind is the discovery of the very small place that Man holds in the Universe, however Man keeps on behaving as if the centre of the Universe. He hasn’t yet realise what is around him. Obviously, we can wonder if being aware of it is useful ? In my opinion, it is more than useful, it is essential. It is indeed the first step towards the path of humility. The only path that seems to get closer to the extremely complicated truth that still escapes us.

To accept that we don’t know anything. To accept that we only master very few things. To accept that our role is a ridiculously tiny one. To accept therefore to use the time that is ours in the best possible way. To not waste it in futility. The more men of science or men of philosophy tend to achieve the top of their subject, the more humble they seem. It’s not a coincidence. Obviously, imagining that Humanity could take this journey to a superior level of consciousness seems a bit utopian. It is however essential. We have all the tools we need to help us to do so.

All it takes is to look up to the stars in the sky on a beautiful evening to realise that a grain of sand on a beach seems more imposing than the place hold by Man in the Universe. The proof lays right under our nose. But today, how many of us realise this ? How many of us really look up to the stars ?
